Morgan Sports Cars: History & Cars

The Morgan Motor Company began in 1910, a family firm launched by Harry Morgan and run by him until at 71 he passed control to his son Peter Morgan. It has since been passed down to his son, Charles Morgan, in 2002 - Charles is still running the company today.

The company produces sports cars, all of which are finely crafted by hand. In style, even new Morgans are the ultimate in retro-sports car design and so popular are they that the waiting list for them is around 3 years!

The original Morgans were three wheelers and used front mounted V-twin motorcycle engines. In 1932 these were replaced by Ford manufactured side valve units.

The first four wheel Morgan was introduced in 1936 and was called the Morgan 4-4 which was replaced by the +4 in 1950 which had a larger (2088 cc) engine. Next came the Morgan 4/4 series II in 1955 followed by the Series III in 1960, the Series IV in 1961 and the Series VI in 1963. In 1960 the Morgan 1600 was introduced with both two and four seat models.

Subsequent models were the Roadster, the Morgan Aero 8 (which was the first Morgan not to feature a wooden frame), the AeroMax and the Aero SuperSports.

The current line-up of Morgans includes the 4/4, the Roadster, the Aero Super-Sports, the Eva GT and even a pedal car. Nowadays, these are all constructed with a light-weight aluminium chassis and a range of powerful engines; for instance the Aero Super-Sports has a 367 Bhp 367 Bhp V8 unit, with a top speed of 170 mph and a 0 to 62 mph acceleration time of just 4.5 seconds.

Although these are not the greenest of cars (the Supersport has a fuel consumption of 17 mpg) an all-electric Morgan is said to be on its way. If you are intrigued to find out more information about other types of sports cars visit motors.co.uk.
